Teacher’s Corner

Lies

Yevgeny Yevtoshenko

Telling lies to the young wrong

Proving to them that lies are true is wrong

Telling them that God’s in His heaven

And all’s well with the world is wrong.

Tell them the difficulties cannot be counted and

Let them see not what will be

But see with clarity these present times.

Say obstacles exist they must encounter

Sorrow happens, hardships happen.

The hell with it. Who never knew the price of happiness

Happiness

Will not be happy.

Forgive no error you recognize, it will repeat itself

Increase, and afterwards our pupils

Will not forgive in us

What we readily forgive

As a teacher, I found this poem a great help.

Morning begins with number of mathematical calculations, figures, symbols, languages, problems and what not. What ever we do, see, touch, experience we come across Maths in one form or the other. This shows the importance of Maths. in our daily life.Inspite of it to my unhappiness, the subject is gradually losing its taste among most of the students due to some solid and practical reasons. I, a Maths teacher in Amrit Vidyalaya talk to two of my students of std.VIII, what they LIKE and what they DON’T LIKE about Maths.one of them is strong in Maths and the other one is weak in it.

Student - 1

I like Maths because :

1) It is full of logic.

2) While I solve hard sums my mind broadens.

3) There is no need for digest as we need the help of digest for other subjects.

4) I get encouragement from my parents as well as my maths teacher.

5) It is very interesting for me.

Student – 2

I don’t like Maths because:

1)     I feel afraid of Maths. It has very long question and a very small answer.

2)     When I hear or see Maths word I feel unconscious and my hand start shaking.

3)     When I try to learn the rules and law of maths lesson I always get confused.

4)     I do not score good marks as I score in other subjects.

5)     If a step is missed or went wrong, the sum becomes wrong and we lose mark.

From the above response it is clear that Maths teachers should think about it seriously and devise innovative methods to bring back the lost glory of this subject. To my mind, the solution to this problem can, at times, be found out beyond the contents given in the text book and relating the concepts more and more to our practical life.
